(78721) Johnston Terrace / Airport Blvd / East MLK Apartments
78721 Is Where East Austin Gets Affordable
East Austin Apartments (78721) Mix of 2020–2024 new construction and older garden-style communities, studios from $1,050.
I’ve toured apartment communities across the 78721 ZIP code. Some of them more than once. This area is one of the most underrated pockets of East Austin, and I don’t think enough renters know about it. Johnston Terrace area with Airport Blvd, Springdale and East MLK sit just east of the 78702 corridor that gets all the attention, but rents here run $200 to $400 less than what you’ll find closer to Plaza Saltillo or East Cesar Chavez. And you’re still about 15 minutes from downtown without traffic.
Every community in this neighborhood has a full review below for you to review. Each one covers what listing sites leave out: actual screening criteria, real fee breakdowns, net effective rent math, and honest resident feedback compared to what I saw on my own tours.
A few things worth knowing about 78721 before you dig in.
78721 has more variety than almost any other East Austin ZIP code. Brand new mid-rise construction from 2024 sits a few blocks from garden-style communities built in the late 1960s. Huge spread. Studios start around $1,050 at the newer properties, with most falling in the $1,250 to $1,400 range. Two-bedrooms at the older communities still start under $1,000. If you’re getting priced out of 78702 or the Mueller area, this ZIP code is worth a serious look.
