Moving into a new apartment is an exciting adventure, but it can also be overwhelming if you’re not prepared or if your a germophobe like my wife. Ensuring you have all the essential items will make the transition to your new place smoother and more enjoyable knowing you don’t need to worry about whether the previous tenant kept a clean house. Here’s a comprehensive list of must-haves to help you get started before your move-in just to make sure everything is in tip top shape.
1. Cleaning Supplies
Before you unpack all of that heavy stuff and all your new bedding, give your new space a thorough cleaning. Essential items include:
- Vacuum cleaner
- Mop and bucket
- Broom and dustpan
- Cleaning sprays and disinfectants
- Sponges and scrubbers
- Trash bags
2. Kitchen Essentials
A well-equipped kitchen can make your new apartment feel like home. If you don’t have any of these items stop by one of Austin’s Goodwill locations and pick up some of these basic necessities that include:
- Pots and pans
- Cooking utensils (spatula, ladle, whisk)
- Knives and cutting boards
- Plates, bowls, and cutlery
- Glasses and mugs
- Dish soap and sponges
3. Bedroom Basics
Your bedroom should be a cozy retreat and you want to ensure everything is clean enough for you to bring that date back you met on South Lamar after a few to many drinks with your friends. Make sure you have:
- Mattress and bed frame
- Pillows and bedding (sheets, blankets, comforter)
- Nightstand
- Lamp
- Hangers for your closet
4. Bathroom Necessities
Stocking your bathroom with the right items ensures your daily routines go smoothly. More importantly this is where we all spend a little to much time getting ready for the day so you want it to be organized AND clean. Don’t forget:

- Towels and washcloths
- Toilet paper
- Bath mat
- Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste)
- Plunger

Creating a comfortable living room is key to enjoying your new apartment. If you don’t have any furniture I’m not sure what to tell you. I guess there is always the “FREE” section on Craiglist? Consider:
- Couch or sofa
- Coffee table
- TV and entertainment center
- Bookshelves
- Rugs and throw pillows
6. Home Office Setup
With more people working from home, a functional home office is crucial but I’m not sure if you need these all to be that clean. In any case this is what I need at a minimum for me to operate as an apartment locator. Essentials include:
- Desk and chair
- Computer and accessories (keyboard, mouse)
- Notebooks and pens
- Filing organizers
- Printer
7. Storage Solutions
Maximize your apartment’s space with effective storage – especially if you live in a studio or 1 bedroom. Useful items include:

- Under-bed storage boxes
- Shelving units
- Storage bins and baskets
