Let’s explore some of the top neighborhoods that have young professionals moving to in droves.
1. Downtown Austin
Downtown Austin is the heart of the city’s nightlife and arguable the place you want to be if you have money to spend on dining, drinking and an expensive wardrobe. You’re surrounded by an abundance of bars, live music venues, and top-notch restaurants plus you’ll have Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s within walking distance. This area is bustling with energy with quick access to the hike/bike trail on Ladybird, making it ideal for anyone who loves to be in the thick of it all. Live music pulses through the air, from the legendary 6th Street to the refined vibes of the Warehouse District. If you’re intersted in living Downtown and renting a condo or apartment – it means you’ll never be far from the action.
2. South Congress (SoCo)
Known for its eclectic atmosphere, South Congress is a mix of vintage boutiques, hip eateries, and lively bars which is more or less the Michigan Avenue of Austin. The area has its unique charm with street performers and an artistic vibe but it’s usually where you’ll find people visiting from out of town window shopping and a place where locals like to take friends and family who haven’t been to Austin before. It’s a place where creativity thrives, and social gatherings are a daily affair with a whole lot of little things to enjoy like nitrobrew coffee, cupcakes from food trucks and other delicacies. Unfortunately it’s becoming a little to commercial with high end stores like the Nike Store that just went up. SoCo is perfect for those who appreciate an artsy, vibrant lifestyle who like coffee, conversation and restaurants with plenty of social opportunities to meet and talk with people.
3. Rainey Street
Rainey Street’s bungalow bars offer a unique social scene but renter beware – this area is loosing it’s charm with so many high rises and all that development with oh so much traffic! With a cozy community feel on Rainey street itself, it’s a favorite among locals and tourists alike who want to experience what nightlife is like on a street where houses have been converted to bars. The food trailers and cocktail bars are second to none, making it a great place for social gatherings but be prepared to know this is a place where people like to go and drink lots of alcohol. Living here provides easy access to a plethora of unique hangouts as I’m sure you could imagine.
4. East Austin
East Austin is known for its culturally diverse environment and vibrant nightlife. The area boasts a mix of dive bars, craft breweries, and gourmet food trucks across an ever growing part of Austin that is taking it’s time growing up. It’s an ever-evolving neighborhood that attracts those who love to explore and immerse themselves in diverse cultures right across 35W between East 5th and East 7th streets. Renting here means being at the forefront of Austin’s burgeoning social scene since there are so many changes underway. If being close to downtown without downtown highrise apartment rental prices is your thing – consider this area to stretch your rental dollar. Alternatively if you’re OK with commuting on the light rail or bike path you might want to consider some apartments further NE off Manor Road where it’s a little more chill. You’ll still have access to bars and restaurants but it’s not gonna be crazy like Rainey and other parts of East Austin.
5. South Lamar (SoLa)
South Lamar, or SoLa, has recently seen a surge in development, becoming a hotspot for trendy bars, eateries, and outdoor beer gardens. Known for its relaxed vibe, SoLa is perfect for those who enjoy a laid-back social scene and finer dining. With numerous live music venues like the Saxon Pub, it’s an excellent choice for renters who want a balance of calm and excitement. Most people who rent here work downtown but like the fact they can access Highway 71 for quick access to 34 and Mopac. Plus you’ll have a lot more access to more affordable shopping, dining and groceries with the nearby Sprouts, HEB off Oltorf and Kroger off Ben White Blvd.
6. Bouldin Creek
With a strong sense of community, Bouldin Creek offers more than just social venues. It’s about being part of a neighborhood that values interaction and creativity which is why you’ll get chill vibes at Bould Creek Cafe and Thai Fresh – two of our favorite spots in this area. Known for its coffee shops, craft markets, and community-focused events, it provides a more subdued, yet equally engaging social experience that is walkable and not overrun by people looking to bar hop.
7. Hyde Park
While traditionally residential, Hyde Park has its share of cozy cafes and local restaurants that serve as social hubs. It’s ideal for those who enjoy more intimate gatherings over large throngs of people. The historical charm of the area adds to its appeal for renters who appreciate a quieter, but no less social, lifestyle. In reality, I like to compare it as the Bouldin Creek of the North. People are nice but it’s likely a younger hipster crowd being close to UT. Rent here is expensive for the new stuff but you can still find apartments without washer/dryers for a pretty low rental rate below $1000 if you’re lucky.
8. Clarksville
Clarksville combines history with modern-day social spots. Its quaint streets are dotted with unique restaurants and boutiques, providing plenty of opportunities for social interaction. For those wanting a blend of history and contemporary flair in their social life, Clarksville is an ideal choice with close proximity to downtown and swath of new bars and restaurants opening up. This area is pretty expensive considering how close it is to downtown but it’s predominiantly single family homes and a few mid-rise apartments. Once the high rises start going up here – lookout. This area will be expensive!
9. The Domain
The Domain is your answer if you want a downtown lifestyle without actually being in downtown Austin or wanting to pay downtown Austin rental prices. This sprawling center combines luxury and convenience with a touch of Texas charm but you should know – this is filled with a lot of young professionals who like to spend money. If you like meeting people with similar life goals such as maintaining a career path, nice cars and expensive shopping this might be the place for you. With a wide array of stores, restaurants, and even a hotel or two, it’s not just a mall—it’s a lifestyle hub with happy hours and apartments with young professionals who are enjoying life and meeting others.
